PEDRO VASQUES: EDGE OF CIVILISATION
Opening: Wednesday February 3, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition: February 3 – 23
Gallery@28 proudly presents “Edge of Civilization” by Pedro Vasques.

Brazilian born model and photographer Pedro Vasquez is an exuberant emerging
artistic talent that has exploded onto the Sydney art scene.
Through his dramatic use of HDR or High Dynamic Range photographic images, he
emphasizes the detail of his subject matter with a hyper real, painterly technique that brings a unique vision and drama to the world of photographic art.
The son of a successful restoration architect mother, Pedro was sometimes allowed to join her onsite and quickly developed a fascination with the exploration and
documentation of building sites and abandoned urban architecture which was expressed through drawings and images captured on his mothers old camera.

His inspiration as a child led to the pictorial documentation of typical Brazilian street life. Blessed with famous Brazilian genetics Pedro was discovered and at the age of 16 began a successful modeling career, which allowed him to travel the world and fed his creative hunger for photographic subject matter and diversity.
"Being in front of the camera was my job but my vision outside the beauty and
perfection of the modeling world enhanced my need to capture the complete opposite…to find beauty and hidden dialogue in the unusual, in quiet urban scenes or in the border between nature and man made…” explains Pedro.
Pedroʼs ability to emphasize the beauty of decay in the urban landscape through detail and depicted color is profound…” states Kate Hopkinson-Pointer.
Kate is the director and curator of Gallery@28 who is hosting Pedroʼs solo show Edge of Civilization opening on Wednesday 3rd of February.
There is a curious isolation in the works as if he were documenting the archaeological
remains of an ancient civilization. The depiction of graffiti highlights this important part of social visual commentary that dates back primitive cave paintings and strongly features in the history of most ancient civilizations including the Egyptians and the Greeks.
Its through his use of vivid color against the sharp back and white structural details that he is able to communicate the significance of what he seeʼs and the feeling he gets from a place which poses the question, who was here?
