DONNA SMULLEN
Opening: Wednesday April 21, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition: April 21– May 11
Gallery@28 proudly presents Written on the Body by Donna Smullen
Donna Smullen puts abstraction aside and makes her masterful return to the figurative in her latest exhibition.
"I was inspired by the innate beauty of the human form and a desire to re-gain focus and discipline in my work…” explains Smullen.
These works are detailed, finely produced pencil drawings focused on studies of the human form.

“What attracted me to Donna’s work was its organic sensitivity, her use of mixed media and the materials relationship with the subject matter,” discusses Kate Hopkinson-Pointer, curator and director of Gallery@28, Woollahra.
The artist works directly onto plywood using the grain and natural irregularities in the surface to enhance the natural connection between nature and the subject matter.
“There is a lovely intimacy in the smaller pieces that contrasts with the grandeur and scale of her larger works…” continues Kate, “the work is majestic and delicate, imposing and intimate.”

The subject matter is humble and natural contrasting with the intense and sophisticated talent required to replicate such subtle human details.
“I hope that my interpretation of the details allows the to viewer gain both a magnified and essential vision of the human body” states Smullen.
