Inner Journey is Nahomi Yoshizawa first solo show at Gallery@28 where she has appeared in several group shows. In these works, the artist explores her own interior landscape in a series of dynamic oil paintings on canvas.

“I believe that abstract form can reveal pure feelings from within the unconscious,” says Yoshizawa, who describes her multi-layered colour-scapes as an “anthology” of her inner life.

Eclectic use of colour and spontaneous, gestural brushstrokes are the artist’s response to the world around her, drawn from her daily experiences. The linear, lyrical quality of her paintings find their roots in Japanese writing.

Gallery owner, Kate Hopkinson-Pointer, says Yoshizawa is a rare thing: an incredibly good mark-maker and abstract painter. “Her work isn’t decorative at all, it’s very gutsy. She’s a painter’s painter.”

Yoshizawa work draws on the traditions of expressionist and abstract expressionist painting, which often had a close relationship to music. “The qualities of music are important inspiration for my painting,” says Yoshizawa, and like the rhythms, vibrations and beats of music registered on a computer screen, her paintings pulsate with a life of their own.

Born in Japan, Yoshizawa moved to Sydney in 1996 where she studied Painting and Photography at Meadowbank Campus. In 2007 she was the winner of the Matisse Derivan award for Painting in the Sydney Gallery School and this year was highly commended in the Photography prize category at Art Unlimited, Dunedoo NSW.

Yoshizawa has appeared in the Erotica group exhibition at gallery 28 this year and at the Art House in Vancouver, Canada. Prices for the works will start at $800 rising to $2500 for larger canvases.
