“Primavera” is Cath Fogarty’s first solo exhibition of ceramics. Italian for “Spring”, the artist says it’s her favourite season and synonymous with new beginnings. “My work is full of floral and organic imagery and reflects my ongoing interest in the beauty of domestic objects.”

The collection features a series of pots made in slip-cast porcelain that has a fine, translucent quality. Varying in size from 20cms to 40cms in diameter and about 20cms in height, the pots are decorated with patterns found in nature and that hark back to traditional fabric motifs from the past.

“With the current work, the designs are all inspired by fragments of fabrics in my home. The furniture that I’ve inherited from previous generations, and floral fabrics that remind me of my mother who created a beautiful home with heart.”

Fogarty is interested in the way people use and cherish domestic objects and how we create our own domestic rituals using favorite cups, bowls or chairs etc. The worn, misshapen objects that act as aids to memory and enrich our sense of place and identity.

This aesthetic, of ageing and imperfection, of vulnerability and durability is a theme echoed in the choice of material. Porcelain, as a material, is strong but appears precious and fragile at the same time.

Kate Hopkinson-Pointer, owner of Gallery@28, says Cath Fogarty produces ceramics that have a classical feel. “I particularly like the very feminine quality in her work; they are extremely delicate and beautiful.”

In many senses this exhibition is all about women and valuing the work that women do in their traditional domain: the home. It’s touching and appropriate that Fogarty dedicates the show to her mother. “She was a domestic goddess and this is something that honours my mother, one year after losing her.”
