“When you come into the gallery, it’s like being surrounded by water.” Kate Hopkinson-Pointer, owner of Gallery @28, is discussing new works by artist Greer Clayton, a collection of large, ocean-themed canvases that were inspired by Clayton’s regular runs along the coastal path between Bondi and Coogee.

Layers of pearlised paint and translucent tints are blended in horizontal waves across the canvas. Garnet gel and pumice stone mortar are applied to surfaces to create a sparkling, sand-like texture that gives the illusion of light reflecting off water or bubbles rising to the surface. The effect, although extremely tranquil and calming, holds mystery just like the sea itself.

“Her work is extremely popular and keenly sought after,” says Kate Hopkinson-Pointer who notes that since Greer’s move from New Zealand back to Australia in 2008, her palette has changed. “In Greer’s last solo show at Gallery@28 she had these volcanic browns and greys which were very New Zealand but now she’s using the blues, aqua, greys and turquoise of Sydney’s waterscapes.”
Greer Clayton was born in New Zealand and studied art at Auckland University before a stint in London followed by a move to Sydney where she established a decorative paint effects business. Returning to Auckland in 2004, she exhibited her landscapes in various shows alongside her decorative arts work.

Clayton says that these are some of the largest works she’s ever done with the largest at 2m x 1.7m. She painted many of them on the floor or large table, walking around them splashing the canvas with paint and blending until she got the effect she was after. Clayton hopes that the viewer will feel “submerged in the artwork as if they are swimming through water”.
