Exhibition of erotic art reveals hidden depths
Gallery@28 proudly presents the group exhibition, Erotic.
Erotic is an exhibition of sensuous, humorous and provocative works of erotic
art which is to be held at Gallery@28, 28 Queens Street, Woollahra from
Wednesday 30th June to Tuesday 20th July.

A group of 18 diverse Sydney artists have been exploring the delicate subject
of erotica and will be displaying their interpretations through a collection
of drawings, prints, oils, digital paintings, sculpture and mixed media.
Kate Hopkinson-Pointer, the owner of Gallery@28 in Woollahra, exhibits an
eclectic mix of artists. She was inspired to hold a group show on the subject of
erotica because she believed it would be both challenging and liberating for her
artists to explore and that the resulting works would be interesting and diverse.
Her instincts proved correct and the works on display show an inspired energy
and creativity ranging from realistic portrayals of scantily clad nudes, to vibrant
coloured sensuous abstractions.
Kate Hopkinson-Pointer is keen to make a distinction between erotic art and
pornography as she feels it is a distinction that is often misunderstood.
“It is a fine line between erotic art and pornography, but there is a line,” says
Hopkinson-Pointer.
“Artists depict the human form and sexuality in an erotic or intimate way to create
beauty, to inspire, to gently tease, or to somehow intellectually challenge the
viewer. With the sensuousness is subtlety.”
“Pornography however, tends to be highly explicit, it is often exploitive, degrading
or violent,” says Hopkinson-Pointer.
Works featured in the exhibition
- A strangely beautiful depiction of a breast resting on a delicately sculptured hand
is by Bronte artist Donna Smullen. Smullen specialises in mystical anatomical
- An abstract seascape where waves follow the sensuous curves of the human
form is by marine landscape artist Greer Clayton.
- A stylised image of a pair of men’s hands almost reverently removing a high
heeled red shoe from a woman’s leg is by Darlington artist Michael Fairweather.
Fairweather is one of very few artists in Australia successfully creating works
using computerised painting.
- A humorous image of a woman lifting her dress to reveal her naked body to a
man nearby is by gallery owner Kate Hopkinson-Pointer. It is a parody on 19th
century Victorian erotica.
- A sexually charged, high energy abstraction in red where colour itself evokes
eroticism is by Nahomi Yoshizawa.
- A drawing of woman’s torso with breasts and genitalia teasingly peeping out from
a carelessly draped piece of fabric comes from printmaker Ron McBurnie.
- A peaceful but strangely seductive work showing a sleeping woman reclining on
a couch with her dress riding up over her thigh is by Yvonne East.
- A mixed media, surreal skeletal pelvis, with human legs attached comes from
Yiwon Park.
